Living local > Shopping sustainably > Shopping locally

Shopping local helps ensure you put your money where your mouth is.
Local shops are more bound to the values of their smaller customer bases – meaning that they are much more responsive if the community doesn’t appreciate something they’re doing.
Benefits
Community
There’s a sense of community around knowing the best local spots to pick up particular items – you also get to know who all makes up the city of Lincoln.
Accountability
Local business owners are frequently members of the same community where their business lies – meaning that their well-being is tied to that of the city.
Pride
Lincoln has many local businesses, and they’re an important part of what makes the city so unique. Growing more comfortable and familiar them is a great way to build pride in the city.
More information
The City of Lincoln has multiple resources that makes it much easier to shop locally when you’re looking for a particular item.
Downtown Lincoln shopping directory
Live in the downtown area, or looking for something new and exciting? Visit the Downtown Lincoln shopping directory (linked below), which allows you to browse downtown and Haymarket shops by name and category.
Lincoln shopping directory
The general Lincoln shopping directory (also linked below) is a great place to check when looking to purchase a particular item locally. Though it doesn’t list all local shops throughout the city, it still serves as a great resource to check before resorting to a large corporation.
Greenstain
Greenstain is an online local sustainable clothing company founded by a UNL graduate (while they were still in school!). Visit the link below to browse their shop, and learn more about their founding story in this article, written by the Daily Nebraskan.
Lincoln’s commitment to shopping local
In March 2021, Lincoln’s Mayor signed a regulation to ensure the city government is following through with their values: city purchasers looking for a product are to purchase it locally if it can be found for a reasonable price, and the item is under $10,000.
