Nebraska’s yard waste disposal ban
From April 1st to November 30th of each year, yard waste (defined as grass clippings and leaves) are not allowed to be disposed of in Nebraska landfills (with certain exceptions). This ban went into effect back in 1994, with the successful goal of reducing waste volume in landfills (learn more here).
Each city has particular guidance on what to do with grass clippings and leaves; other yard waste (such as weeds, garden waste, and small tree trimmings) can continue to be included with your regular garbage pickup. In Lincoln, here are some options for disposing of grass clippings and leaves:
Spread it on your yard
The easiest method of disposing of yard waste is to simply leave it in a thin layer on your yard to decompose. This is particularly simple for grass – and mowing over leaves to break them into pieces helps them break down faster, as well.
Drop it off
The Bluff Roads Landfill is an approved landfill for yard waste – meaning that it is either composted or used to harvest methane as fuel. Residents can drop off their yard waste within the site.
Compost it
