Achieving net-zero emissions by 2040
Lincoln Electric Systems (LES) has set and approved a goal of 100% decarbonization by the year 2040. They are looking to do so by utilizing the following:
Solar energy
LES’s primary method of generating renewable energy comes from their community solar program. They utilize three different programs to support solar energy: SunShares, virtual net metering, and customer-owned generation. Click the link below to learn more about LES’s community solar programs.
Wind energy
LES collects the electricity generated from a variety of wind turbines. However, this energy is not used for its customer base – instead, it is sold to other recipients as renewable energy. Click the link below to learn more about LES’s wind initiatives.
Landfill gas
LES is partnering with the City of Lincoln to help turn methane produced by waste decomposition at the Bluff Roads Landfill into clean electricity. The City drilled 54 wells to harvest the gas, which LES then purchases and transports to a facility to turn it into power for Lincoln residents and businesses. The program first had its start in November of 2013.
Electric vehicle (EV) studies
LES is currently conducting two studies involving EV’s. One study utilizes customers that currently own electric vehicles, and, with their help, is measuring the impacts that electric vehicles have on the grid within Lincoln. The second study is looking into what barriers are preventing more people from purchasing EV’s, and putting together a model on the future of EV use in the Lincoln area.
Educational tiny house
LES’s mobile Education, Interactive Tiny House (EdITH) is a mobile method for LES to teach homeowners and renters how to make energy-efficient choices in their homes.
Hydroelectric power
LES does not generate any of its own hydroelectric power – however, it does purchase hydroelectric power from the Western Area Power Administration.
