What is net metering?
According to LES, “net metering is a billing arrangement where residential and business customers who produce their own energy from renewable sources…can get a credit on their electric bills for extra energy that flows back into our distribution system.”
Virtual net metering is just that, but virtual – you purchase solar panels in half-panel increments through LES, and LES then maintains those panels in their solar fields. They record how much electricity each panel generates – that’s the equivalent of the “extra energy” mentioned above – and you receive that much power for free (with the credit removed from your electric bill), as if the panel was on your own home.
